Jill Scott is the only child of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up as a single child. Scott graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two different positions. Her goal was to be a teacher of English at a secondary school. However, her dream was cut short when after three years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. She began her career by singing live poetry and performing her own work. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. During Roots' performance she came out as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the very first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
